The Roots of Modern Plastic Surgery

What is the first thing you think about when someone mentions the term “Plastic Surgery”?  Is it Dr. 90210, the Housewives of Orange County, or is it World War I?

Chances are, most people did not choose the last option nor would they even know that contemporary Plastic Surgery actually has its roots in treating injuries sustained on the battlefield.  Well it does.  And if you look even farther back, Plastic Surgery actually began in early India where a version of the Forehead flap was used to recreate a nose (which was often removed intentionally for particular crimes, etc.)  From there, there is a significant amount of history much later when it was used to treat wounds sustained during the American Civil War.

Whichever way you look at it, the history of Plastic Surgery is rich and the results we achieve today are a reflection of the great strides and accomplishments made by its early surgeons.
