How can I improve the appearance of my neck?

First of all, I’d like to apologize to everyone for my temporary hiatus from posting new articles. My goal has always been to keep you all up-to-date on the latest product and procedural breakthroughs in plastic surgery, but demands of publishing my forthcoming book have kept me a little busy. With the launch of “Eat Drink Heal: The Art and Science of Surgical Nutrition” in the next few weeks, I will be returning to posting new information to keep everyone educated! That being said, let’s talk about what we are doing for necks!

Options for rejuvenating your neck

Neck rejuvenation has always been a challenge. The skin is thin and there are very few sebaceous glands, so healing typically takes longer. Because of this, we have had very few options to offer patients…until now.

To better understand how to address the aging neck, let’s talk about what causes your neck to age. First, the skin tends to wrinkle and loosen and brown spots appear. The skin thins and develops a crepey, aged appearance. Next, we often lose the sculpted appearance of the neck and the jawline as we gain fat beneath the chin. To address these age-related changes, there are now several things that we can do!

Let’s start with beneath the chin. To effectively sculpt this area and create a more defined chin and jawline, we are now using several different approaches:

• Ultrasonic Liposuction:
  • Advantages:
    • One-time treatment (30 minutes)
    • Requires only 2-3 two millimeter incisions
    • Minimal post-procedural pain
    • Mild post-procedure swelling
    • Initial results seen immediately with continued improvement over 6-8 months
  • Disadvantages:
    • Surgical procedure
    • Chin strap recommended x 5 days

VASER Liposuction (neck/jawline)

• ThermiTight:
  • Advantages:
    • In-office procedure (30 minutes)
    • Requires only 2-3 entry points (so tiny that no sutures are necessary)
    • Minimal post-procedural pain
    • Mild post-procedural swelling
    • Initial results seen immediately with continued improvement over 6-8 months
  • Disadvantages:
    • Requires minimally-invasive in-office procedure
    • Chin strap recommended x 5 days

ThermiTight (neck/jawline)

• Kybella injections:
  • Advantages:
    • Very quick in-office procedure (15 minutes)
    • No incisions necessary
    • No chin-strap necessary
  • Disadvantages:
    • Requires 2-3 treatments (3 months apart)
    • Moderate post-procedural swelling following 1st treatment (greatly reduced with subsequent treatments)

Kybella (neck/jawline)

We also improve the quality of the neck skin using one or a combination of the following:

• Hyaluronic Acid Filler + BOTOX Cosmetic:
  • We combine an HA filler, such as VOLBELLA XC or Juvéderm Ultra XC with a very dilute concentration of BOTOX Cosmetic. This has been shown to integrate nicely into wrinkles of the neck while also gently improving the appearance of the overall skin.
• Chemical Peel:
  • We encourage exfoliation of the aged skin and stimulation of new collagen by applying a moderate depth chemical peel. Peeling usually occurs over a period of 4-6 days, after which you are left with a radiant and glowing neck!
• Microneedling:
  • Through a series of 4-6 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart, microneedling stimulates natural collagen production within your skin and thickens thinning, loose skin of the neck.
