Consultation & sizing session
Once you’ve decided that breast augmentation may be a great choice for you (congratulations!), you’ll meet with Dr. Buford for a private consultation to discuss your concerns, learn more about your options, and even try some breast implants on for size.
Breast implant considerations you’ll discuss with Dr. Buford:
- What size implants are right for me? »
- Your breast implant options »
- Are silicone breast implants safe? »
Taking both your personal goals and unique anatomy into consideration, Dr. Buford will use his many years of experience and expert training to help you choose the best breast augmentation options to meet your needs. He will recommend the perfect type and size of breast implants for you and design a surgical plan that will give you results you’ll love.
Although the breast augmentation procedure is relatively straightforward, most of the planning actually occurs outside of the operating room. Experienced breast surgeons such as Dr. Buford understand that the more prepared you are going into the procedure, the more predictable the results. To achieve this, information gained during your initial econsultation with Dr. Buford is critical. Be honest with him and with his staff about your expectations and what it is that you would like to accomplish.
Sometimes, patients benefit most from combined procedures or may see better results from a different procedure. Your consultation is the perfect time for Dr. Buford to guide you in the right direction.

Once you have made the decision to move forward, a preoperative appointment will be scheduled. During this appointment, Dr. Buford will discuss your surgery, associated risks, and post-op aftercare in depth. Final implant sizing will be decided and any additional questions you have will be answered. Your “before” photos will also be taken at this time.
What to expect on surgery day
On your day of surgery, you’ll arrive an hour before your procedure and meet with Dr. Buford, the anesthesiologist, and the nursing staff to go over final paperwork and review what to expect from your anesthesia care and surgery. Dr. Buford will take final measurements and make markings to guide your surgery.
Through these incisions, will perform an intercostal nerve block and numb the breasts for increased comfort, in addition to washing the pocket with triple antibiotic solutions to reduce risk of complications.. He will then create the breast pocked and precisely place your breast implants either over (subglanduar) or under the pectoral muscle (submuscular). If you’ve chosen saline implants, the implants will be filled to size once they have been inserted.
Once your implants have been properly placed in the breast pocket, an Intercostal Nerve Block will be performed to help you heal as comfortable as possible. Dr. Buford will then suture and dress the incisions.
You’ll be able to return home soon after surgery, though you will need a designated driver and someone to assist you for the rest of the day as you recover from anesthesia.
“…I picked a range of implant sizes with Dr. Buford before the procedure (425 cc – 510 cc) knowing that he picks a size during the surgery that looks best with your body. He ended up going with 520 cc implants and I’m so happy he did. A month after the procedure and I get compliments from the girls at work all the time! The whole process has been great and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”-Actual Patient of Dr. Buford
Recovering after breast augmentation
After surgery, Dr. Buford will provide you with discharge instructions and prescribe pain medication to help manage your discomfort, but many patients are able to switch to an over-the-counter pain reliever within just a few days. If you have an office job, you will likely be able to return to work within three days or so, though it’s important to take it easy and avoid strenuous activity. You will return for follow-up appointments after three weeks, three months, six months, and one year.
During the first few months of healing, we encourage our patients to perform breast implant massage at least 10x per day to allow the implants to settle as quickly as possible. This procedure will be discussed at your pre-operative visit and will be discussed during your first few appointments.
Some patients settle more quickly than others and so there is variability as to when you will see your final results but most patients are very pleased with the appearance of their breasts rather quickly and are only disappointed that they didn’t seek breast augmentation earlier!

Dr. Buford was the easiest doctor to make an appointment with (and I called several), his staff is amazing and I find myself looking for reasons to go back…As for the procedure, it was easier than getting my teeth cleaned…I went shopping about 24 hours after the procedure. I’d recommend Dr. Buford and his team time and time again!”-Actual Patient of Dr. Buford, June 2017

Whatever your needs are for breast augmentation, his goal is to create a look and feel that is natural and proportionate to your body and that will enhance your lifestyle, however that looks to you.
Ensuring your comfort through advanced breast augmentation methods
An advancement in silicone breast augmentation placement, the Keller Funnel™ allows Dr. Buford to place silicone gel breast implants with smaller incisions, reducing risk for certain complications, and increasing precision.
To help get you back on your feet as quickly as possible, Dr. Buford also offers a unique approach to post-operative pain control: the Inercoastal Nerve Block. This revolutionary technique helps a majority of his breast augmentation patients get off of narcotic pain medications within a day or two after surgery.
While you are still asleep, a small amount of local anesthetic will be injected to the side of your chest to effectively block pain fibers from your breasts to your brain for around 8 hours, making a dramatic difference in your need for pain meds after surgery. Because of this block and Dr. Buford’s specific breast augmentation technique, a majority of his patients are back to work within 24-48 hours following their procedure.
